There’s something profoundly special about guiding someone through the misty forests of Rwanda, especially when the person in question is as adventurous and curious as Olle Ostman 🇸🇪. The two-day Eco-Trek we embarked on to Mount Bisoke Hike and the Mountain Gorillas was not just another trekking experience — it was a journey into the heart of the wild, uncovering the hidden gems of Rwanda that I hold so dear.
Our adventure began on the slopes of Mount Bisoke, nestled within the Volcanoes National Park. I’ve had the privilege of guiding many treks through these mountains, but there’s always something new and exciting when you’re sharing it with someone who’s seeing it for the first time. We started the hike early, the crisp mountain air filling our lungs as we made our way deeper into the forest. Olle, with his infectious enthusiasm, was already asking questions about the wildlife, the flora, and the secrets hidden in the mist that surrounded us.
As we ascended, the sounds of the jungle came alive — from the twittering of birds to the distant call of Golden monkeys swinging in the trees. The lush greenery enveloped us, and with every step, we moved closer to the summit. The fog rolled in like a blanket, adding an element of mystery to the landscape. But when we reached the top, the view of the crater lake was nothing short of magical. The stillness of the lake, set against the towering peaks, felt like a moment suspended in time.
The following day, we set off on a truly life-changing experience: the trek to see The Mountain Gorillas. There’s something truly humbling about venturing deep into the jungle with the sole aim of connecting with these magnificent creatures. As we navigated the dense foliage, Olle’s excitement was palpable, and I couldn’t help but smile — this was going to be an unforgettable moment.
And then, we found them. The mountain gorillas, peacefully feeding and moving with a grace that belied their size. Olle was absolutely captivated, and I could see the awe in his eyes as he watched them up close. The quiet strength of the gorillas, combined with their gentle demeanour, left both of us speechless. It was a raw, powerful moment, reminding us of the importance of preserving these incredible creatures for generations to come.
For me, the true reward of being a guide is witnessing the transformation in my guests. Watching Olle, who came as a traveller, leave with a profound connection to Rwanda’s natural beauty and wildlife, made me realise how lucky I am to do this work. It wasn’t just about the trek; it was about sharing a deep appreciation for Rwanda’s wildlife, its landscapes, and its people.
Rwanda’s hidden gems — from the misty forests of Mount Bisoke to the powerful presence of the mountain gorillas — left an indelible mark on Olle. But more than that, it left me with a renewed sense of pride in my country and the work we’re doing at Eco Terra Vista to protect and share these treasures with the world.
I would like to thank Olle for being such a wonderful companion on this journey and for allowing me the privilege to share Rwanda’s magic with him. I’m always thrilled when travellers leave with a greater understanding of and connection to the place I call home.
If you’re looking for an authentic, transformative experience in Rwanda, I can’t recommend Eco-Treks enough. It’s not just about the trek — it’s about creating memories that will stay with you forever.
